What Happens During a Shamanic Healing Session? What to Expect Before, During, and After
If you have never experienced shamanic healing before, you may be curious about what actually happens during a session. Unlike some forms of energy healing, a shamanic healing session does not always follow the same process or use the same techniques.
At New Earth Metaphysical in Moorestown, New Jersey, I allow my helping spirits to guide the direction of each session. Sometimes, before a client arrives, I journey to my helping spirits to ask what type of healing or which methods would be most beneficial for that person. Other times, I feel called to begin the session without determining the approach in advance and allow the work to unfold as I go.
Even when I receive guidance beforehand, I remain open to changing direction during the session. Shamanic healing is a dynamic process, and additional information or healing needs may emerge once the work has begun. My role is not to decide intellectually what a client needs, but to remain attentive to the guidance of my helping spirits throughout the healing process.
What Is Shamanic Healing?
Shamanic healing is a spiritual healing practice rooted in the understanding that our well-being involves more than the physical body. Experiences such as trauma, grief, difficult relationships, major life changes, or prolonged emotional stress can affect us energetically and spiritually as well.
Shamanic practitioners work with helping spirits and altered states of consciousness to identify and address these deeper energetic or spiritual concerns.
Depending on what is needed, a session may involve practices such as soul retrieval, power animal retrieval, extraction healing, energetic clearing, cord cutting, ancestral healing, or other spirit-guided techniques.
Not every person needs the same type of work, and not every session needs to include multiple techniques.
Before Your Shamanic Healing Session
At the beginning of the appointment, we will talk about what brought you to the session and what you would like help with.
You do not need to understand shamanism or know what type of healing you need. You can simply explain what has been happening in your life, what you have been feeling, or what you hope to address.
From there, I begin the shamanic work and seek guidance about what may be contributing to the issue and what healing is appropriate.
What Happens During the Healing?
For much of the session, you can simply relax.
Shamanic healing often involves rhythmic drumming or other methods of entering a shamanic state of consciousness. During this process, I work with my helping spirits to receive information and perform the healing that is needed.
The experience on the client’s side varies considerably.
Some people notice physical sensations such as warmth, tingling, heaviness, or a feeling of energy moving. Others experience emotions, memories, mental images, colors, or a profound feeling of relaxation. Some people simply lie quietly and do not notice very much while the work is happening.
There is no correct way to experience a shamanic healing session.
You do not need to see visions, feel energy, or have an unusual spiritual experience for the session to be meaningful.
Why Every Session Is Different
One of the things I value about shamanic healing is that it does not need to follow a rigid formula.
Someone experiencing the effects of an old traumatic event may need very different work from someone struggling with a difficult relationship, feeling energetically depleted, or going through a major transition in life.
Even two people who describe similar concerns may receive very different healing.
Rather than approaching every client with a predetermined sequence of techniques, I allow the information and guidance received during the session to determine the direction of the work.
What Happens After the Healing?
When the healing work is complete, I let you know that the work has been done. In the tradition in which I was trained, the details of what the practitioner sees, feels, or experiences while performing the healing are generally not shared with the client. This allows the healing to stand on its own without influencing how the client interprets their own experience.
The client’s experience, however, is their own to share. You are welcome to talk about anything you noticed, felt, saw, remembered, or experienced during the session if you would like to.
The effects of shamanic healing may also continue to unfold after the session. Some people notice an immediate shift, while others experience more subtle changes over the following days or weeks. You may notice changes in your emotions, energy, dreams, perspective, or overall sense of well-being.
Do You Need to Believe in Shamanism?
You do not need to have extensive knowledge of shamanism before having a session.
You also don’t need to know how to journey, meditate, communicate with spirits, or do anything special during the healing. Your role is primarily to be present and receptive to the experience.
Many people come to shamanic healing simply because they feel that something in their life needs attention on a deeper level and they are interested in exploring a spiritual approach to healing.
